Frequently Asked Questions
The purpose of therapy is to offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to discuss any difficulties or challenge they are experiencing with a trained professional. As a therapist, my role is to walk alongside you to help you work towards a preferred way of living. This is not a one size fits all process - strategies and approaches are tailored to you based on your unique situation, goals, and existing strengths.

In our first session, we will go through informed consent to participate in therapy, including answering any questions you might have about what to expect from the therapy process. Together, we will identify goals to work on and create mutual expectations for the therapy process and create a plan for next steps.

How people respond to therapy is unique to them! Some people might feel tired, energized, excited, scared, anxious, or confident leaving sessions. I will be there to support you throughout and help you make sense of these feelings.
Social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists and occupational therapists are all regulated mental health practitioners in Alberta and are great options in supporting individuals in their mental health journeys. Generally speaking, therapists from all of these backgrounds will have some overlap in the approaches and techniques they use in their practice. However, there are some notable differences.
While each therapist's approach varies, social workers tend to view things in "the big picture." Instead of focusing only on what is happening within an individual, we aim to also understand the relationships and spaces "in between." This means we understand humans as being part of a large, complex web of relationships and connections that can have a tremendous impact on one's mental health. In addition to things such as coping strategies and overall individual wellbeing, exploring topics such as political influences on one's wellbeing, access to basic needs, and the level of inclusion one feels in their community are all areas a social worker might be interested in during the therapeutic process. In addition to offering individual mental health support, many social workers are also actively involved in advocacy to help shape communities and systems so they better respond to the needs of those they support.

As a social worker, I believe strongly in ensuring clients have access to the community resources and supports they need to thrive. This could include access to funding (such as FSCD or PDD) or community resources such as peer groups or recreation opportunities. Many of these resources can be challenging to navigate and involve a complex application process. This is where I come in! I am available to help identify potential resources and support you and your family in getting connected to appropriate supports. I am also able to help with program referrals and advocacy as needed.
System navigation services are available to all individuals I work with in our regular therapy sessions. If you have any questions about any specific community supports, please do not hesitate to reach out!
No! A referral is not needed to book an appointment. Some extended health benefits providers may require a referral from a healthcare provider to offer reimbursement for services. Check with your insurer for more information.
The focus of your first session will be getting to know each other and creating a plan for future sessions. We will discuss topics such as informed consent and the therapeutic process, and I will ask you some questions to get to know you better.

If your session is in person, please feel free to bring whatever you might need to make yourself comfortable.

If we are meeting virtually, I recommend ensuring you have a strong and stable internet connection and access to a camera and mic. It is also encouraged that you make sure you have a quiet and private space where you feel safe and comfortable to join the call. Feel free to make your space cozy - bring blankets, a pet, or whatever else you might need to feel comfortable!
